Carlos Jose Mena was born on November 4th, 1927, in San Antonio, Texas to Delfina Lara and Enrique Mena. His mother passed away when he was seven years old, but he continued to adore her and recall fond memories about her throughout his entire life. He joined the U.S Navy on his 17th birthday in 1944. During his Naval service, he took part in the Battle of Okinawa, which was a significant event leading up to the success of the Allied Forces in 1945 when World War II was coming to an end. After serving 19 months in the Navy, he went into the U.S Army in 1948 and served 24 years. In the 1950's, he was an occupational troop in Europe and spent two years in Austria, two years in Germany, and served in France as well. During his time in Europe, he learned to speak German and French. He went on to serve in Korea until 1962. In 1966, he was stationed in Panama before returning home and deploying to Vietnam where he proudly and honorably served with the 9th Infantry Division nicknamed "Old Reliables."
He was awarded the Republican Vietnam Service Medal W/3 Bronze Service Stars, Bronze Star W/OLC, Army Commendation Medal W/OLC. He retired Master Sergeant, E8. After retirement from the United States Armed Services, he continued serving in Government Service for many years. After Government Service he became a businessman. He owned and operated Aldo's Bar and later founded the Real Estate Company Action Real Properties. He was a devout husband to his beautiful wife, Juana Mena. Together they had four children, Carlos Jose Mena II, Belinda Mena, Aldo Mena, and Ugo Mena. His support, love and dedication to his family was steadfast and unconditional.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Juana Mena, his brothers Enrique, Aldo, and Andres, his sister Dolores, and sisters-in-law, Maria de Concepcion and Maria de Jesus Padilla. He is survived by all four of his children and six grandchildren, whom he loved and cherished passionately, and whom love him in return for eternity. He was an honorable and devout, not only in his long military career, but in his life as he faithfully served his entire family, his community and everyone in need. He was a perseverant Soldier for this Nation and for his faith, which he cherished.
A visitation for Mr. Mena will be Wednesday March 9, 2022 from 5pm to 9pm with a Vigil at 7pm to be held at Funeraria Del Angel Restlawn, 8817 Dyer St. El Paso, TX 79904. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30am, Thursday, March 10, 2022 at the funeral home, followed by a graveside with full military honors at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
