Carl Joseph Hanly was born July 25, 1928, to Joseph Alphonse Hanly and Josephine Pauline Hanly in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He passed July 4, 2021, in El Paso, Texas.
Carl was the oldest of five children. He is survived by his sister Margarite Funk of Pearland, Texas. He was preceded in death by his sisters Nancy Lane of Fargo, North Dakota, and Barbara Yosick of Northbrook, Illinois, and his brother Paul of Payson, Arizona.
The family moved to Oklahoma City while Carl was in grade school where they were very active in the Catholic Church. His father, Joseph, was the founder and owner of the ACME Potato Chip Company.
Carl graduated with the class of 1947 from Classen High School in Oklahoma City. He went on to the University of Oklahoma where he studied psychology and obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1951.
He met Betty Lou Seay in Oklahoma City in the Spring of 1951 and they married July 18, 1951.
During the Korean conflict, he volunteered for the United States Navy and served as a combat photographer aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Wasp.
When Carl returned from naval service, he went to work as a manager at the Acme Potato Chip plant. He and Betty had their first son, Steven, while they were living in Oklahoma City. Carl went to work for the SAFECO insurance company in 1960 and he and Betty had their second son, Eric, a short time later.
Carl and Betty moved their young family to El Paso in 1964 where he continued to work for SAFECO and later, Employers’ Insurance Company. They had their third son, Barry, and fourth, Brendon, a few years later.
In 1978, Carl founded ‘Carl Hanly – Risk Management Services’ in central El Paso. He conducted private investigations for attorneys and insurance companies in El Paso, Juarez, and New Mexico. He operated the business until his retirement in 2003.
Carl is survived by his four sons and their families: Steven and Leanne of Flower Mound, Texas and their children Austin, Madeline, and Dillon; Eric and Jacqui of Peachtree City, Georgia and their sons Travis and Collin; Barry Hanly and Matt Austin of Baltimore, Maryland; and Brendon and Laurie of Diamond Springs, California and their sons Garrett and Reagan.
