Arthur Francis “Doc” Anthony, 68, of El Paso, Texas passed on to his new life to join his sons Marc and Martin, on Friday February 2, 2018. Doc was born October 18, 1949 and was a lifelong resident of El Paso. He attended Loma Terrace Grade School, Bel Air High School and UTEP. He ventured off to California to find fame and fortune and when that didn’t work out, he returned to El Paso and played his cherished drums in various rock bands. He also managed the Adobe Horseshoe Theatre in San Eli.
He met his beloved wife in 1972 while playing in the four man combo band at the Festival Theatre during the run of West Side Story. Teresa Navar was playing the role of “Anita” and he loved to tell the story of how he met and fell in love with that girl on stage. They married in 1974 and four months later when they found out they were expecting their first child, he decided the money one makes playing in a rock band was not “gonna” cut it. That decision catapulted him into a 30 year career in the restaurant business.
Starting off as a bartender and waiter at Mama Trees, he went on to manage restaurants such as The Iron Tender, The Cinders and Chicken at the Ritz. He then became a partner and managed Smokey’s barbeque, Springfire’s, and finally Doc’s Bar-B-Que. He retired after another 8 years of managing the Cracker Barrel.
It was then he was able to pursue his passion of music and joined up with his best bud, Bernie Mora and the group Tangent. Besides the birth of his sons, this was the best time of his life. The “guys” cranked out two very successful CD’s that are being highly applauded in the Jazz world.
Doc became a man of great faith with a love for God and a generous and friendly personality that made everyone who crossed his path feel like a best friend. He was very involved in his newly found Catholic community at St Raphael Church and participated in several ministries. He was an Acts brother and Core member. After his first year in RCIA he received his sacraments and then returned to sponsor 5 other wonderful men into full communion with the church.
He loved the outdoors, fishing, target shooting and camping with the guys. They called themselves “Camp Good to Go”.
He is preceded in death by his sons, Marcus and Martin Anthony and survived by his wife Teresa as well as many loving extended family members. He will be deeply missed.
Visitation will be held from 5:30 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. on Thursday February 8, 2018 at Martin Funeral Home on Montana with a celebration of life rosary service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday February 9, 2018 at St. Raphael Catholic Church.
