Our beautiful and beloved mother, Alicia Esparza, left us to join our father, Angel Esparza, in heaven on Monday, September 17, 2018. They were married for 68 years when Dad passed on June 26, 2018. She was born in La Union, New Mexico on December 31, 1928, the youngest of three children born to Virginia and Ruben Alvarez. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Ruben and her sister, Elena (Tinker) Lizama. She is survived by her eight children, Delia Esparza (Joe Olague), Yolanda Esparza, Raul Esparza, Juan Esparza (Teri), Jaime Esparza (Noelia Molina), Monica Esparza (Larry Mendoza), Angela Hubbard (John), and David Esparza (Tami). She also leaves behind 16 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and another great grandchild arriving in November 2018.
Alicia was a graduate of Loretto High School and Hotel Dieu School of Nursing. While she was a nurse both in hospitals and elementary schools, her children were her life and her passion. She and our father worked to ensure that all their children received an education, and she was incredibly proud that all eight graduated from college. Her favorite pass times included cooking and baking for her family. Christmas will never be the same without her prune braid, cookies, and fudge. But most of all, her children will remember her generous spirit and compassionate heart.
She sacrificed many things in an effort to give her children a better life. We have her to thank not only for our accomplishments but also for the legacy of love, friendship, and family that she has left us.
The entire family wishes to express a special thank you to Dr. Jesus A. Gomez, MD, from Texas Oncology, Liz Solis her massage therapist, and Connie and Mike Wilczewski from St. Patrick’s Homebound Ministry. The family also wishes to extend their thanks and appreciation to their sister, Angela, and the entire Hubbard family for their devoted and excellent care of our mother. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Annunciation House to support their work protecting and preserving immigrant families, 815 Myrtle Avenue, El Paso, Texas 79901. https://annunciationhouse.org/financial-donations.
