Sue Shackelford Crawford, 83, of El Dorado, died Wednesday, August 27, 2014, following a lengthy illness. She was born November 7, 1930, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Cleon J. and Mildred Gatling Shackelford.
She grew up in DeWitt, Arkansas, and attended Hendrix College and Arkansas State Teachers College, from which she graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. She came to El Dorado following college graduation and taught fifth grade for many years in the El Dorado Public Schools System at Hugh Goodwin, Retta Brown and Yocum Elementary Schools. Midway through her teaching career she decided to return to college to gain certification as a Learning Disabilities teacher. In 1975 she obtained a Master of Arts in Special Education from the University of Central Arkansas. She was proud to have attended UCA under three of its four names.
She was a member and past local president of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional honor society of women educators, the First United Methodist Church of El Dorado, and during her teaching career, to many organizations associated with education.
She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Sam H. Crawford of El Dorado, daughters Sammye Crawford of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Connie Ehlmann (Jim) of Macomb, Michigan, son Chris Crawford of El Dorado, and three grandchildren, Jay and Samuel Ehlmann of Macomb, Michigan and Hannah Crawford of El Dorado, of whom she was immensely proud. Also surviving is her brother, Joe Shackelford (Linda) of DeWitt, Arkansas, two nieces, a nephew, and two very dear friends, Jane Hall Shackleford and Kay Shaddock, both of El Dorado.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday, August 29, at Young’s Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at First United Methodist Church of El Dorado with the Rev. Keith Dodson officiating.
