Ray Scroggs (Poppy), 78, of El Dorado, moved to heaven to teach the angels to sing on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at the John R. Williamson Hospice House. He was born December 20, 1943, to Ivan Ray Scroggs, Sr. and Glorian Aslin Scroggs in Magnolia, AR.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in Music at South Arkansas University in Magnolia. Ray began his teaching career in Naples, Florida, and continued at Yellville High School. He moved to El Dorado in 1970 where he met his wife Barbara while playing cards. He worked as the music teacher at Rogers Junior High School for 33 years and Parkers Chapel School for 10 years. Ray served as Minister of Music for 51 years at First Christian Church and many years at St. Paul Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church and Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Ray had a love, beginning in childhood, of antiques. He made many friends buying and selling at his store, Attic Treasures and Poppy’s Emporium.
Preceding him in death are his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Allen Scroggs of El Dorado; daughters, Amy Allen of El Dorado (Tracy Alderson); Ashley Brummett of Little Rock; sisters, Sharron Morgan and Glo Joy Warga both of Magnolia; and grandchildren, Josie Rae Allen, Abbey Layne, Kyle Brummett, Blaire Brummett, Jewell Fort, David Fort, and John Fort.
To his former students, he asked that you remember, “I’ll Be Your Candle On The Water”. To my Grandchildren, “My greatest joy was being your Poppy.”
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Young's Funeral Directors.
