He was valedictorian of Camden High School in 1954 and then attended Southern State in Magnolia before a transfer to Louisiana Tech University where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in accounting. In college he worked in the school bookstore and tutored student athletes. After graduation, Odie earned his CPA license and worked for Peat Marwick Mitchell in Dallas where he provided the tax work during the formation of the Dallas Cowboys.

There he was active in his children’s schools and sports and was a deacon and treasurer at Edgewater Baptist Church. Additionally, he was a member of professional organizations and served as the president of the Finance and Accounting Program of the American Petroleum Institute.
Odie returned to El Dorado in 1992 as treasurer at Murphy Oil. He gave his time on several boards such as the Boy Scouts of America and the Union County Equalization Board. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church where he taught a men’s Sunday School class.
Jefferson Street Books is the result of Odie’s determination that El Dorado maintain a bookstore, and he could often be found smoking a cigar on the bench outside the door. He was a kind and generous man known for a sharp mind that delivered the unvarnished truth.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Sandra Beard Vaughan, son Michael, daughter Elizabeth, grandson Benjamin, nephew David Vaughan (Linda) of Camden, brother-in-law Bob Beard (Debby), and his 19 year old dachshund Max.
