Jewell Marie LaGrone Sewell, 96, passed away October 19, 2014, at her home in El Dorado. Born April 27, 1918, she was the only child of the late William Loddy LaGrone and Elizabeth Kennedy LaGrone. Jewell was raised in the Hopewell community, attended school in Mt. Holly, where she graduated in 1936. At Mt Holly she met Wilson Horace Sewell, whom she married on November 8, 1941. They owned and operated Sewell Grocery at Shuler, Arkansas, for 15 years. After that, she supported Wilson’s venture into the oil business, which resulted in them later owning and operating Shuler Drilling Company.
Jewell’s life was filled with family activities, church-related functions, gardening, travel, cooking, and watching Razorback basketball. A warm and welcoming place, her home was the site of many family and church gatherings. She will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.
Jewell was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years Wilson Sewell, and a son, Rickey Jean Sewell. She is survived by a son Gary Wilson Sewell and his wife Kristi, a daughter, Paula S. Reynolds and her husband Robert M. Reynolds; her grandchildren: Gary Brandon Sewell and his wife Erin Mays Sewell; Justin Scott Sewell and his wife Summer Davis Sewell; Dr. Elizabeth Sewell Rollins and her husband Dr. David Rollins; Richard Evan Reynolds and his wife Kayla Loker; her great-grandchildren: Hayden Sewell; Clayton Sewell; Halle Sewell; Schuler Sewell, Madeline Rollins; Eve Marie Rollins.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful caregivers who attended her for years: her faithful cousin Marie Fife; Terry Jamerson; Judy Lynn Sewell; Joann Bright; Kay Tolbert; Guadalupe Peralta; Willie Bridges; Others who were a part of the support team were Valora Griffin, Sarah Sharp, James Steward, and Life Touch Hospice Employees.
Bill Sewell, David Sewell, Brandon Sewell, Justin Sewell, Evan Reynolds, and David Rollins will serve as pall bearers. Honorary pall bearers will be the members of Dumas Memorial United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be 5-7 pm on Tuesday, October 21 at Young’s Funeral Directors. A memorial service will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday at Dumas Memorial United Methodist Church, 132 S. Wyatt Dr., with Rev. Pat Daugherty officiating. Burial will follow at Fredonia Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors.
