Born on March 24, 1936 in El Dorado, AR; Bud was the son of George Clifford and Lela Lessie Ward Cates. He retired from Lion Oil after 30 years of service. Bud enjoyed hunting Quail, training horses, and was a Farrier in South Arkansas and North Louisiana. He was a member of Rhodes Chapel Methodist Church.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents; son, Paul Cates; sisters, Jean Atkinson, Margaret Wood and Clara Faulkner; and step-mother, Clara Belle Cates Zwahlen.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Nancy Rushing Cates of El Dorado; son, Allen Cates (Karrie) of El Dorado; brother, Leon Cates of Junction City; grandchildren, Reese Cates (Desirae) of McAlester, OK, Colt Cates of El Dorado, Reagan Cates of Fayetteville, Reid Cates of El Dorado; and great Grandchildren, Raysen and Riviera Cates.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, September 29, 2023 at Young's.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in Young's Chapel with Rev. David Bush officiating. Burial will follow at Old Parkers Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Young's Funeral Directors.
