He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he attended the Young’s Men’s Bible Class. He attended Jr. College in El Dorado from 1940 to 1941, Curtis was a Veteran of the United States Army Air Corp. during WWII, and was assigned to the 45th Fighter Squadron in Hawaii in 1942. Curtis went to Iwo Jima in 1945 where he was chief inspector. He stayed on inactive service after the war, and was recalled in August 1950. He was sent to Randolph Field in San Antonio and was discharged in 1951. He retired from Monsanto in August of 1983, where he worked as a lab technician.
Curtis was the neighborhood handyman, he enjoyed carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work, he was one of the old “Jack Of All Trades”. He was a gardener and planted enough to share with friends. Mom was always glad when the garden died. Curtis was a Mayhaw gatherer. He made jelly and delighted in sharing it with friends and family. Many people benefitted from his labors.
Preceding him in death are his parents; his wife of 63 years, Eloise McCuin Sewell; and brother, Loyce Sewell.
Survivors include his daughter, Carolyn Gaunt (Bill) of El Dorado; son, Alan Curtis Sewell (Kay) of Midland, TX; three grandchildren, Brad Gaunt (Cari) of East Asia, Kedric Sewell of Midland, TX, Aubrey Sewell of Charleston, SC; great granddaughter, Addison Gaunt of East Asia; and sister, Shirley Dumas of Tyler, TX.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 7, 2015, at Young’s Chapel with Dr. Lynn Worthen officiating. Burial will follow 55at Fredonia Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. prior to the service.
