Robert Lee Martin Rotnem

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Robert Lee Martin Rotnem (Bob), who departed this life on June 18, 2024, in his home in Santee, CA. Born on August 14, 1943, in San Diego, Robert's life was a testament to love, dedication, and unwavering support for those he held dear.

Bob was the son of Rolf Wendel Rotnem and Elaine Wanita Shaw Rotnem. His early years were spent in the warmth and sunshine of Key West, Florida, where he developed a lifelong love for history and the church.

The Rotnem family moved to San Diego where, at the age of 17, he chose to serve his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. While in the Marine Corps, Bob spent time at sea on the USS Princeton. He also completed an 11-month deployment to Viet Nam, then returning to San Diego where he served as a drill sergeant at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego.

A man of faith and service, Bob left the Marine Corps to complete his education to become a Lutheran pastor. He completed his Bachelor’s degree at Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, IN. He then went on to earn a Master of Divinity degree from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, IN in 1989. He was ordained into the parish ministry at his first church, Bethany Lutheran Church in Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada where he served for just over 3 years. He left Canada to accept a call to Light of the Valley Lutheran Church in Valley Center, CA. In 1995 he accepted a call to Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Atwater, CA where he served from 1995 until 2003 when he retired from the ministry. Following his retirement he served as vacancy pastor for churches in El Centro, CA and Spring Valley, CA.

His dedication to his faith and community was a guiding light in his life and the lives of many he touched.

Bob married the love of his life, Marilyn Kay Shirk, on March 28, 1964. Marilyn remained his steadfast companion through all of life's trials and triumphs, celebrating 60 years of marriage on March 28, 2024.

Bob was the proud father of two daughters, Gina and Lisa. His pride in their achievements was apparent to all who knew him. Bob also leaves behind a brother David Rotnem (wife Cheryl) and a sister, Christine Rotnem Sarckees (husband Russel). His legacy lives on through his seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored and who brought joy to his life.

An enthusiast of modern and historical pastimes, Robert found joy in the simple and complex alike. He loved immersing himself in computer games like World of Warcraft, where he found a sense of camaraderie and challenge. Robert also enjoyed the serene beauty of camping, the strategic enjoyment of board games, and the rich stories of history. These hobbies reflected his curious and vibrant spirit.

Family was a vital element in Bob’s life in which he found joy and peace of mind.

The family will hold a celebration of life on July 20, 2024, at 2:00 pm, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1370 Euclid Avenue, San Diego, with Pastor David Weber officiating. A committal of Bob’s ashes will take place at 12:30 PM on Tuesday, July 23, at the Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Dr, San Diego. All who were touched by his kindness and generosity are welcome to attend and honor his memory. Please be at the Cemetery no later than 12:15 for the processional to the service location.

Bob Rotnem’s legacy is one of love, compassion and caring for others. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of his loved ones and all who were fortunate enough to know him. Rest in peace, Bob. Your life was a blessing, and your memory will be a treasure.
