Lee and Gladys Thompson. Growing up in a nurturing environment, she developed strong values
and a deep sense of compassion that would guide her throughout her life.
After she graduated from high school, Mary pursued her passion for helping others by obtaining
her LVN (Licensed Vocational Nurse) certification. She began her nursing career specializing in
the ophthalmology department, where she skillfully cared for patients' needs for 18 years. Her
dedication and compassionate approach to nursing made a lasting impact on many lives.
Mary met David Baker, the love of her life, in 1945, after David returned from fighting in the
Pacific as a Marine. Their marriage, filled with warmth and mutual support, spanned an
incredible 72 years, during which time they had their beloved children- Sandra, Kathy, and
David Franklin (aka Butch). They built a wonderful life together. Mary is survived by her
daughter Kathy, 5 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Mary often spoke fondly of the
adventures they shared and the love that sustained them through both joyful and challenging
times. David passed away in 2018, leaving a profound void in her heart.
As a devoted member of the Protestant faith, Mary found great solace in her spirituality. She
participated actively in her community at College Avenue Baptist Church, sharing her voice and
love for music as a cherished member of the choir and the Focus Sunday school class. Her faith
played a crucial role in her life, providing her with strength and purpose.
Beyond her nursing career and spiritual dedication, Mary had a rich tapestry of hobbies that
reflected her creative spirit. She had a passion for sewing and quilting, often creating beautiful
handmade items for her family and friends. Cooking was another joy for her, as she delighted in
preparing meals and sharing them with her loved ones, making every gathering a special
occasion filled with warmth and laughter.
Most importantly, Mary cherished her family above all else. She took great pride in being a
caring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, fostering strong family bonds that would
last generations.
Mary Lee Baker passed away at her home in San Diego, CA, on March 19, 2025. Her kind spirit,
unwavering love, and dedication to others will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege
of knowing her. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched and the love she shared.
