Irene Nooney was born on October 10, 1935, in Cottonwood, Arizona, to her loving parents, Milton and Connie Avalos. From an early age, Irene demonstrated a deep passion for learning, a trait that led her to pursue higher education at Woodbury University. During her time there, she became a proud member of Phi Sigma Sigma, a sisterhood that reflected her lifelong values of friendship, leadership, and service. While attending Woodbury University, she met the love of her life, John Nooney.
After earning her Bachelor’s degree, Irene embarked on a meaningful and impactful career as the Executive Assistant to the District Attorney of San Diego, where she served with dedication and integrity for over 30 years.
On August 13, 1955, Irene and John were married, beginning a beautiful journey together that would span nearly seven decades. They welcomed two daughters, Cheryl and Kathleen, and in 1960, made their permanent home in San Diego. Irene and John quickly became active members of the community, attending Holy Trinity Church and contributing to the congregation for many years.
Irene was a vibrant member of the Red Hat Society, embracing life with joy and forming treasured friendships along the way. Her love for music and theater enriched her days, and her favorite color, blue, reflected her gentle spirit and the peace she carried with her.
She cherished time spent with her three grandchildren and five great-granddaughters, always keeping her daily Union-Tribune nearby and never without a copy of Woman’s World magazine.
On March 30, 2025, Irene passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her devoted husband and loved ones. Her passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be remembered for her kindness, warmth, and unwavering spirit, as well as the lasting impact she made on her family, friends, and community. Her legacy of love and compassion will continue to inspire all those who had the honor of knowing her.
