Coach Ed Olsen, aka “Skip” to his players, a celebrated figure in the world of baseball, passed away peacefully on, August 11, 2024, at the age of 89 in Santee, California. Born on June 10, 1935, in Salem, Massachusetts to Gertrude (Toomey) and Oscar Olsen. Ed’s life was defined by his passion for baseball, both as a player and a coach. In 1949, at the age of 13, he served as “Bat Boy” for the Pacific Coast Minor League San Diego Padres (the Padres didn’t become a major League team until the league expansion in 1969.) Ed began his 11-year career in the minor leagues when he signed on with the Cardinal Organization a few days after graduating from La Jolla High School. Ed’s professional career was put on hold in 1953 when he joined the United States Marine Corps. After his military commitment, he returned to the minor leagues and played for the Athletics and ultimately the Yankee Organization. Ed’s coaching career spanned decades, and involved coaching high school, junior college, semi-pro and the professional minor leagues. His most notable efforts were recognized at El Capitan High School and Grossmont Junior College. Ed’s efforts earned him a place in the California Community College Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame.
Known for his old-school approach and dedication, Ed made a lasting impact on countless young athletes, shaping their futures both on and off the field. He was a mentor, friend, and father figure to many, always pushing his players to reach their full potential. His legacy in the baseball community is profound, and his contributions will be remembered for generations.
Ed is survived by his loving family and a large community of former players and colleagues who mourn his loss. A private memorial service for his immediate family and close personal friends will be held to celebrate his remarkable life and contributions to the sport he loved.
