Alfred Peter Reinhold passed away peacefully at home in El Cajon, CA, on the morning of 12/24/22. He was 87 years old. Born in Mount Clemons, MI, on 4/20/35, to father Frank and mother Extrahand Reinhold, Al was predeceased by his daughter April Owen and brother Howard. He is survived by sisters Mary Gay and Elsie Leon and by his loving wife of 42 years, Anita.
Services will be held at 11 AM on 1/14/23, at El Cajon Mortuary and Cremation Service. In lieu of flowers, Anita asks that donations be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association, https://diabetes.org/.
Al's family includes daughter Teri Simonis and husband Kurt Ruhland, grandsons Derek, Sean (of Teri and Kurt), and Carter (of April), Derek’s wife Julie, and great grandchildren Fiona and Felix (of Derek and Julie). They remember Al for being loving, kind, industrious, and handy.
Al's Navy service was aboard the carrier USS Essex CV9, where he photographed planes taking off and landing. Al earned his Associate’s degree in the Science of Occupational Safety and Health Technology and later taught safety courses in the evenings at San Diego Community College. He worked at SDG&E for 31 years, first as a Safety Assistant and then as a Heavy Equipment Dispatcher. It occasionally fell to him to inform the widows of men who died on the job, a solemn duty he carried with him all his life.
Al retired to spend his golden years traveling with Anita. He pulled a fifth wheel all over America, eventually spending a summer in Alaska; He leased a lot in a "campo" 27 miles south of San Felipe, where he built a house, as well as helped his neighbors build their homes. Al loved his time there. Grandsons Derek and Sean loved visiting every summer. Al brought books and school supplies to the local school.
Al and Anita loved cruising. They went on 32 cruises, sometimes with friends and other times by themselves. They did other traveling. He especially loved England. On one trip he and longtime friend Bob Beardsley went to the Royal Navy Memorial. In 2021, the Honor Flight Network selected Al for a weekend Honor Flight to DC with other Korean vets. They visited many meaningful memorials, including the Korean War one.
Al is missed and warmly remembered by all who knew him. He was a good, generous man who lived a good life, loving openly and without reserve.
