LaVerne was born in Edmonton and moved to Yellowknife, NWT when she was a teenager, where she met her husband of 62 years, (Henry Havelock) Larry Phinney. They soon moved to Edmonton and in the course of Larry’s work, they called many different places home. Hinton, Edson, St. Albert, Calgary, Whitehorse YK and Fredricton NB. LaVerne always ensured that each place was special in their lives. They met and made many extraordinary friends at every place they ever lived.
LaVerne is pre-deceased by her parents Margaret (Savard) and James Mayne, her big brother Ted Waugh, Sisters-in-law and friends Virgina, Lee and Audrey, and Son-in-law Richard Jolitz. She is survived by her little brother, Roy Mayne, children Fran Wilson (Lloyd Marthaller), Hudson Phinney (Roberta), Trish Shergold (Doug), and Lori Phinney (Richard Jolitz), Grandchildren Nick Shergold (Kayla), John Shergold (Kira) and two Great grandchildren.
LaVerne dedicated her life to her family, extended family and friends with love, strength, thoughtfulness and kindness to all who knew her. She was a dedicated and cherished Daughter, Mother, Grandmother, Great grandmother and made sure her family and friends were always thought of and looked after.
LaVerne loved her photography and had an eye for a picture. Laverne and Larry, in their many travels, took oodles of pictures. Some of her photographs were in a published calendar and gave many framed pictures to family and friends.
This was a sudden illness and many of LaVerne’s extended family and friends did not have a chance to say goodbye to her. We will have a Viewing on Saturday, July 6, 2024, from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Her family will be in attendance for anyone wanting to say goodbye to LaVerne.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Canadian or Alberta Cancer Foundation Research.
