In the early hours of January 26th, Dr. Chakrabartty of Edmonton peacefully passed away near his home at the Misericordia Hospital in the company of his loving wife Aruna; three children, Avijit (Nancy), Vedashree, and Shomee; two grandchildren, Monissa (Khalid) and Sumon.
Leaving India in 1960, he completed his graduate studies in Pittsburg, USA before joining the Alberta Research Council as a Senior Scientist in 1966. He was a founding community member of The Hindu Society of Alberta, Edmonton Bengali Association and Vedanta Society of Edmonton where he dedicated his volunteer services. After retiring in 1992, he worked in collaboration with the Ramakrishna Mission in Belurmath, India in association with Non-Governmental Organizations (Wildrose Foundation, CIDA, Alberta Gaming, SARVIK Swami Vivekananda Gram Seva Sanstha) to empower women, alleviate poverty and develop remote villages through improved access to financial, health and knowledge based resources. His legacy includes a bibliography of published memoirs and observations on developing civil societies.
The family expresses deep gratitude to the EMT team and caregivers at the Misericordia for their round the clock efforts in his extraordinary 6 week experience.
The viewing service will be held at 1pm on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at Hainstock’s Funeral Home in Edmonton. Covid pandemic protocols require all attendees to present their QR coded proof of vaccination along with photo ID in order to enter the premises.
The Shraddha ceremony will take place 8-9:30am, Sunday, February 6, 2022 from at the Hindu Temple on St. Albert Trail. Covid protocols restrict attendance to 1/3 capacity (150) with proof of vaccination.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, that cheques be made out to Vedanta Society of Edmonton who will accept charitable donations to go to the Ramakrishna Mission Swami Vivekananda University.
