Mary Hrywkiw

We are mourning the loss of our dear mother, Mary Hrywkiw. On Sunday, January 1st 2023, Mary Hrywkiw (nee Krywy), of St Albert, Alberta and formerly of Canora, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully at the age of 95. Mary was born on the family farm near Glen Elder/Danbury, Saskatchewan in 1927, the fourth of seven children born to Anton & Annie Krywy (nee Picklyk). She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Mike, Bill, Steve & Paul, sisters Elizabeth & Pauline, extended family members and many treasured friends.

Family was extremely important to Mom. It made her so happy to bless her family and friends with her hospitality, her baking and her much appreciated pyrohy. She shared her love of cooking, baking and gardening with many generations.

Our family is grateful that Mom & Dad chose to move to Edmonton in 2001 to be near their children and their growing families. Although the move was outside Mom’s comfort zone, our family now has so many more memories made possible because our parents lived close by.

She is survived by her five children, Dianne McLean (John), Virgil Hrywkiw (Dawn), Virginia Wildeman (Charles), Lorrette Baynes (John) and Brent Hrywkiw (Jody); 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren & one precious little angel on the way; sister-in-law Katie Krywy, brother-in-law Ed Buk and sister-in-law Lenore Hrywkiw; and her large extended family of nephews and nieces.

Mary was predeceased by her husband William who so patiently waited 15 years for her to join him.

The family extends their sincere gratitude to Dr. Karen Bidniak, Dr. Danél Ungerer, the staff of Citadel Care Centre and the many other people who cared for Mom over the past eight years. Your kindness and compassion did not go unnoticed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

A celebration of Mom’s life will be held at Memories Funeral Home, 13403 St Albert Trail, Edmonton, AB. on Saturday, April 29th 2023 at 1:30pm with a reception to follow.
