He died in Edmonton, surrounded by family, at 83.
Jack’s family will remember him for his ability to soothe fussy babies by touring them around a room, delighting older children with a tickle trunk full of tricks as well as his love for the family’s many dogs, even the badly behaved ones.
He will be remembered by his colleagues as a sharp dresser, a bright and proficient lawyer and long serving Alberta Civil Court judge. Upon mandatory retirement from the bench at 75, he wasn’t quite ready to stop work and enjoyed five years putting his considerable mediation skills to work as a Tenancy Dispute Officer at the Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service.
Jack is survived by his loving wife Gail, his children from his first marriage to Jean Ross: Catherine Allford (Rob Davis), Ross Allford (Paige), Jennifer Allford (Mr. Biddles), Bruce Allford (Mary Moran), Gail’s children: Laurie Bowers (Craig Acott), David Bowers (Lee) and Colleen Bowers (Cindy Jwaszko) as well as eight grandchildren, many beloved nieces and eight “step-squared” grandchildren and great –grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Roger Allford, his wife Jean and their family.
We will miss his quick wit and sharp mind, the creative nicknames he bestowed and his fondness for something sweet right after dinner. We will be forever in his debt for much, including introducing us to frim fram sauce and Little Joe from Chicago.
Thanks to Dr. Emily Walter and the staff at Unit 9Y at the Edmonton General for their loving care.
