Gary’s memory will live on through his wife of 48 years, Diane; children Matthew (Nicole), Megan (Ryan), and Jillian (Tony); grandchildren Talya, Caiden, Audrey, Gavin, Alice, and Solana; brother Dale (Merilyn) and children; brothers-in-law David (Heather) and children, and Allan (Brenda) and children; along with numerous other family members, friends, travelers and golfers.
Gary was a lawyer by trade, both in private practice and corporate contract law but he wasn’t defined by his career. Gary was defined by his love for family and sport. Growing up, he played every sport possible and excelled at them all. He played semi-pro fastball, hockey at Red Deer College, and senior men’s hockey for the Olds Elks. He continued to play sports and stay active including rec hockey for the Molson Lights and finishing a full marathon. He was a lifelong runner, heading out in any and all weather conditions. He loved golfing both locally and away, including a trip to Spain. He shared his passion for sports with his family, and anyone he spoke to.
His love for sports was passed on, as he taught and coached his kids in all their activities; his dedication was unparallel as he didn’t miss an opportunity to cheer them on. This continued with his grandchildren as he spent time throwing, running, chasing, swimming, wrestling, skating and cheering them on. He was their biggest, ultimate fan.
Gary loved family gatherings and reunions, and regularly reached out to cousins, uncles, and aunts.
He loved watching the Oilers and was lucky to watch both Gretzky and McDavid in person; but his favourite Oiler was the Nuge. He loved music - sharing it, listening to it, and playing it on the piano. He listened to all genres so he could talk to his kids and grandkids about what they liked, but above all he loved the Beatles and was recently able to walk Abbey Road on a trip to London.
Gary was a man of many talents who wanted to experience and understand everything, to be able to then share and discuss it with those he cared for. He travelled with family and enjoyed every moment. He got joy out of helping his family. He was a loving husband, father, a father figure to many others, and a beloved grandpa. He left us too soon and will be deeply missed.
The family would like to thank the amazing team at the University Hospital who provided care for Gary. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mazankowski Heart Institute at the University Hospital, or the Sport Central organization to help others find joy in sport. To honour Gary’s life, there will be a celebration for immediate family when the time is right.
