He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Kay, and his daughter Carol Haakenson (Gerald), son Chris and his dearly beloved grandchild Connor. Derek was predeceased by his daughter Julie.
Derek was born in Bradford, England to William and Florrie Sayer in 1932. He immigrated to Canada from Morecambe, England in 1952 shortly after completing his schooling. He pursued formal training in accounting and enjoyed the study of business. He subsequently found work in the automotive industry and would remain in the car business throughout his career. His roles expanded to include management and partnership roles, and he was fortunate to be amongst those lucky enough to want to keep working beyond retirement, or his case, multiple retirements. He also enjoyed contributing as part of the Edmonton business community, including groups such as Toastmasters and The Executive Club, of which he proudly served a term as president. His career not only provided him the chance to provide opportunity for this family beyond what he had enjoyed, but a great deal of satisfaction from accomplishments and the people he met.
Derek was essentially a simple kind of man who enjoyed his family and family time. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of reading his newspaper, watching football and playing golf, bridge and crib. Some of his favourite times were spent golfing in Jasper, walking the beach in Maui and wintering with Kay in Palm Desert. He had his own distinctive style of dress and deportment. He was known for his sense of humour and could regale you with a story with a twinkle in his eye.
The family would like to thank those directly involved with Derek’s care. Dr. Ma, Dr. Birdi, and the nursing staff at the Grey Nun’s Hospital showed genuine concern and care.
In accordance with his wishes, no funeral service will be held. Derek’s request for cremation will be honoured, and the family will have a memorial service at a later date.
Arrangements under the direction of Hainstock's Funeral Home & Crematorium, Edmonton, AB.
