It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Derek Hurst. Derek passed away peacefully with his family present at the Good Samaritan Dr. Gerald Zetter Care Centre on Monday, February 8, 2021 at the age of 95. Born September 12, 1925 in Chapeltown, Yorkshire, England, Derek served in the Royal Navy on the HMS Nelson during WWII. He came to Canada in the late 1950's and lived in Montreal. He worked for Bell Canada for his entire working career in Canada. Derek moved to Edmonton 12 years ago to be close to his daughter and grandchildren.
Derek is survived by his son Michael Hurst ((Nathalie Fricot) of Montreal, daughter Cathy Hurst and grandchildren Allison and Matthew Spiegl of Edmonton along with many nieces and nephews across Canada, USA, England, Australia and Ireland. Derek is predeceased by his wife Rita Sallie, parents Douglas Hurst & Edith Myers, stepmother Jessie Whitam and brothers Ronald and Peter Hurst. Derek will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
The family would like to thank the 3 north staff at the Dr. Gerald Zetter Care Centre for their excellent care and compassion. Cremation will take place at Hainstock's Funeral Home in Edmonton.
A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
