Peggy J. Boyd was born September 12, 1923 to James and Dessie Boyd. She was the third of nine children, and the first girl to be born to the young couple after sons Jack and James were born. Being the oldest girl, she helped raise her younger siblings, Hope, Charles, George, twins Benevee and Genevee, and Hattie, while her mother worked in the fields. Peggy’s help was desperately needed as Dessie Mae became a single mother to nine kids during the Dust Bowl.
Peggy learned her strong work ethic and get-it-done attitude by watching her mom work two to three jobs, raise chickens and turkeys, and operate a hot dog stand and a couple of restaurants. As a teenager, Peggy Jo worked for a Christian family in Floydada, Texas in exchange for room and board so she could complete her high school education. Peggy married her husband H.J. Day in 1942. H.J. served in the US Coast Guard during World War II.
They began their family in October of 1943 with the birth of their first son Wesley, born in Pensacola, FL. Peggy and H.J. were thankfully not separated during the war, as he was stationed stateside. Their second son, John, was born in Mobile, AL in April of 1945. Their final child and only daughter, Jan, was born in Edmond, OK in September of 1947, after the family relocated there for H.J. to work as a machinist at Tinker AFB. Peggy and H.J. helped start the South Woodward Church of Christ and raised their family while attending church there.
Peggy was blessed to be a stay-at-home mom for 10 years, after which she began working outside the home and would continue until she was 75 years old. She and H.J. moved to a farm in Texas in 1976, and Peggy continued living and working there after H.J.’s death in March 1977. While working, she was an avid cowgirl, gardener, quilter, baker, and Christian grandmother. She moved to Edmond in 2004, and volunteered for the prison ministries through Memorial Road Church of Christ, grading correspondence papers as well as at the Edmond Hospital gift shop for many years.
Peggy was proud to be a mother of three, grandmother of six, great-grandmother of eleven, and great-great-grandmother of seven, soon-to-be eight. She was blessed to be the grand matriarch of the family since 1977, when H.J. preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, six siblings, her son John, daughters-in-law Sandy and Patsy, and great-grandson Kegan. She was blessed to live with her daughter Jan for the last few years of her life. She passed peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family. Peggy is survived by her sisters Hattie Kinnard and Genevee Stith, son Wesley Day, daughter and son-in-law Jan and Patrick O’Neal, grandchildren Jeannine and Lenny Mick, Kim and Ken Richter, Penny O’Neal, Ryan and Allison Day, Willie O’Neal, Jay and Beckie O’Neal, 11 great-grandchildren, and seven (soon-to-be eight) great-great-grandchildren.
A come-and-go visitation will occur Tuesday, May 30, 2023 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at Memorial Road Church of Christ, 2221 E. Memorial Rd, Edmond, OK 73013 with the funeral service starting at 11:00 AM at the church. A graveside service will occur Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at 11:00 AM at the Floydada Cemetery, SW Corner of Highway 207 and 232, Floydada, TX 79235.
