Nancy Ann Hurley, age 84, passed away peacefully while surrounded by family on February 5, 2025. Nancy was born in Oklahoma City on July 20, 1940, to William James and Alma Louise Batty. She was a 1958 graduate of Southeast High School. Nancy attended Central State College in Edmond where she met and married Albert Rowe “Butch” Hurley.
Nancy and Butch started a family by welcoming Scott and Alisa into the world while Nancy continued her education, earning her bachelor’s degree in education at Central State. Nancy then taught kindergarten as they moved to Blackwell and Claremore. While teaching in Claremore, Nancy earned her master’s degree in psychology at Northeastern State College in Tahlequah. Armed with her master’s degree, Nancy taught psychology and child development at Claremore Junior College. As busy as she was, Nancy devoted most of her time to her family.
Never one to sit on her hands, Nancy also sold life insurance for Northwestern Mutual (the only job she ever hated), and owned and ran a clothing store, Newport Ltd, in Wagoner and then Muskogee. After closing the store, she became the first counselor and administrator for an experimental court for adult, nonviolent, felony drug offenders in Tulsa County. That experiment has resulted in similar courts today in 73 of the 77 counties in Oklahoma. Nancy continued drug counseling and added foster care counseling until her retirement.
Outside of work and family, Nancy enjoyed volunteering, gardening, fashion, antiquing, and politics. She actively participated in the Wagoner Rotary Club and Main Street program. She was a long-time member of Grace Episcopal Church in Muskogee where she was a vestry member and lay reader. She relished Grace Church’s annual rummage sale.
Nancy is survived by her son Scott Hurley and wife Nora, daughter Alisa Hurley and husband Jim Ferguson; granddaughters Andrea Cottle and husband Cade, Katie Ferguson and husband Blair Corbin, and Abby Ferguson; great granddaughters Cadence and Cree Cottle; brother Hank Batty and wife Joan; and adopted family member Carlos Oliva. Nancy was predeceased by her parents, husband, sister Linda Batty, and granddaughter Emily Nicole Hurley.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 13, 2025, from 5:00 until 7:00 at Baggerley Funeral Home, 930 South Broadway, Edmond, Oklahoma.
