Mary Land was born in May, Oklahoma on November 10, 1933 to James & Nora Covalt. She was one of seven children and grew up on a farm in Woodward, Oklahoma. Her family attended the Church of Christ and she fondly recalled how they had to travel 20 miles to church with her entire family packed into one car. She was a long-time resident of Edmond, Oklahoma where she raised her family.
Mary loved sports, especially playing basketball. In her teens, she participated in the Junior Olympics. As an adult, she loved playing card games and board games with her friends and family. She often played basketball with her sons and grandchildren at the park.
Mary was a devout Christian and a member of Edmond Church of Christ. She was an active member of their singles group, Bible study class and volunteered her time at The Kid’s Place. Mary felt that she had a special gift for teaching kids about the Bible and God’s love.
Mary worked most of her career as a store manager for various McDonald’s restaurants in the Edmond and OKC metro. One of her many responsibilities as the manager was to drive Ronald McDonald around to various functions. After McDonalds, she worked for a tag agency and then became the Office Manager for her son’s roofing company, Land Enterprises Roofing.
Mary was the proud mother to her three sons; Greg, Gary, and Brian. When her boys were young, she was their Boy Scout Den mother. She encouraged each of them to be entrepreneurs and helped them start their paper routes. She also taught them the value of budgeting their money.
She had many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was lovingly referred to as “Grandma Mary” by her grandchildren as well as many other children who were not her grandchildren but simply loved her like she was their grandmother. Mary adored her family and cherished her time with them. She loved any excuse to have a family get together.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, James & Nora Covalt; brothers: Carl, George, and Mark Covalt; and son, Brian Land. She is survived by brothers, Duane Covalt and wife Barbara and Dale Covalt and wife Ila Joy; sister, Dora Goodmiller; sons, Greg Land and wife Sharee and Gary Land and wife Ann; daughter-in-law, Kirsten Land; grandchildren: Amanda Watson and husband Mike, Gary Dean Land, Timothy Land, Nicole Land, Aurora Land, Daniel Land, Evan Land, Erika Giles and husband Matt, Meagin Goff & husband Kerby, DJ Labay and wife Liz, and Luke Labay; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other family, and friends.
