Marjorie Mae Meggs

EDMOND — Marjorie Mae Patchin Meggs, 93, passed away June 28, 2013. She was born August 30, 1919 in Hobart, Okla. to Henry Ezra Patchin and Mary Brown Patchin. Marjorie grew up in Hobart until graduating from Hobart High School in 1937. She spent one year in Hobart Jr. College and graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1942.

Marjorie married James Elijah Meggs on August 1, 1942 in Washington, D.C. where he was stationed with the U.S. Navy. To this union Pat, Jane, Jim and Henry were born.

Marjorie returned to school after raising her family to receive her teaching degree. She taught art in the Oklahoma City School system at Jefferson Junior high School.

In 1973, Marjorie moved with her husband to Amarillo, where she volunteered at the Amarillo Art Center as a docent and church work in the Paramount Baptist Church. She worked in a government program with Carolyn Osborn and then became a secretary for the executive director of the Amarillo-Dumas Girl Scout District.

When James’ position took them to Edmond, Okla. in 1981, Marjorie spent her time as a volunteer in many organizations. She was president of the Edmond Historical Society for two years, receiving the Edmond Preservation Award for Community Service in 1995 and the Edmond Historical Society 15th Anniversary Award in 1998. She was the registrar of the Samuel King Chapter of the DAR. Marjorie helped start the Edmond Genealogical Society in 1991 and was editor of the Quarterly. She also served as the chairman of the Historical Committee of the First Baptist Church Edmond, where she was a long-time member.

Marjorie’s joy in life was working on the genealogy of her family, and spending time with her sisters, Zelma Patchin of Stillwater and Helen Patchin of Dallas, and with her grandchilden and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband James E. Meggs and her son Jim Meggs, Jr.

She is survived by her daughter Pat and her husband Barry Nelson of Macon, Ga.; daughter Jane New of Coronado, Calif.; son Hank Meggs of Las Vegas, Nev.; 6 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be 6-8 p.m., Thursday July 11 at Baggerley Funeral Home.

A graveside Celebration of Life will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2013 at Gracelawn Cemetery, in Edmond, 24 E. 1st St., with a special DAR ceremony in her honor.
