Dan graduated from John Marshall High School and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army as a combat veteran during the Vietnam War. After his service, he remained connected to the military community as a retired member of the Army and a proud member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
Music was a constant in Dan’s life. A self-taught guitar player with a natural tenor voice, he shared his music through church ministries and with anyone who was lucky enough to hear him. His voice and songs brought comfort, joy, and connection to many.
Dan was a longtime member of First Southern Baptist Church in Arcadia, where his faith was an important part of his life. He believed in loving God and his family deeply—and he lived that out every day.
He was the kind of person who could find the good in others, and he had a way of making people feel seen and cared for. Whether it was a holiday gathering or a simple visit, his favorite moments were those spent with family. He appreciated the little things: a good laugh (especially while watching Uncle Buck or The Parent Trap), the color blue, and staying in touch with those he loved.
Dan is preceded in death by his parents John and Helen Steakley and his brother Steve Steakley. He is survived by loving wife Kathy, his four children Kristi Steakley and husband Jonathan of Oklahoma City, Anna Johnson and husband Jay of Edmond, Matt Francis and wife Sonya of Austin, and John Francis and wife Amie of Broken Arrow. Dan is also survived by his sisters Cinde Michaud and husband Tom of Edmond, Debi Young and husband David of Arcadia, Leigh Ann Adams of Newcastle, and Trish Ewing of Houston, along with 9 grandchildren Chance Harmon, Perry Kearnes, Scott Francis, Julian Johnson, Brooklyn Sims, Camron Sims, Tate Sims, Sophia Francis, and Logan Sylvester, 5 great grandchildren, and thirty-one Nieces and thirty-two Nephews.
He leaves behind family and friends who will miss his presence, his warmth, and the way he always made room in his heart for others. His life was guided by Christ’s love, and that love will continue to live on in those who knew him.
A memorial service for Dan will be held Friday, April 25, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Baggerley Funeral Home, 930 South Broadway, Edmond, OK 73034.
