Javier Lopez Barrera

Oklahoma in a tragic accident doing what he loved: tending to his land and anmals. He was born on October 16th, 1952 in the rural hills of Quitandeje Hidago Mexico.

Born into extreme poverty, life called upon him at an early age to support himself and his mother. His circumstances forced him to leave school after the 3rd grade and his mother, starting a long life journey of work in support and betterment of his family. He worked as a laborer in construction and farming in his childhood years. He lost his mother too soon as she passed from cancer in his early twenties. However, God blessed him at that time with the love of his life and soulmate, Maria Mejia, also from Quitandeje. They started their lifelong journey together and created a family having one son, Gerardo Lopez Mejia.

In search of opportunity and a better life for his family, Javier emigrated from Mexico to the United States. He worked in the farms of Texas until settling in Oklahoma in the 1980s in Edmond. God sent him a second mother, Imogene Harlan, who was a nurse anesthetist and miniature horse enthusiast. Imogene’s family had roots in Edmond since the 1930s. He worked and lived on her miniature horse farm in addition to being a carpenter in the OKC metro area. Javier lived out the remainder of his life in Edmond (until Imogene’s passing in 2004) and Arcadia with his son, wife/soulmate in Maria. Always improving himself, he achieved his GED with a 3rd grade education. He lived humbly his entire life and saved/invested every penny he earned into his family. He taught his son his work ethic, generosity and drive and instilled in him the value of humility and education putting him through medical school, debt free. He found joy, pride and accomplishment in working in carpentry in homebuilding and worked his entire life with Austin Construction and most recently Silver Stone Homes. Although able to retire at any point, he joyously worked until the last day of his life. His passion was singing Ranchera music from the hills of Quitandeje to the plains of Arcadia. He had lifelong companions in his cats that were family to him. His joy was the farm and rural life. He extended his wisdom, generosity, and helping hand to his family, friends and strangers.

He is survived by his soulmate, Maria Mejia; his son, Dr. Gerardo Lopez Mejia M.D. and his family: wife, Corazon Lopez, children Victor Lopez, Amelia Lopez, Briana Donovan and Jasmine Debrosse

Javier López Barrera, de 72 años, falleció repentinamente el 24 de enero de 2025 en

Arcadia Oklahoma en un trágico accidente mientras hacía lo que amaba: cuidar su

terreno y sus animales. Nació el 16 de octubre de 1952 en los cerros rurales de Quitandeje Hidalgo México. Nacido en extrema pobreza, la vida lo llamó desde temprana edad para mantenerse a sí mismo y a su madre. Sus circunstancias lo obligaron a dejar la escuela después del tercer grado y a su madre, comenzando un largo camino de vida trabajando para apoyar y mejorar a su familia. Trabajó como obrero en la construcción y en la agricultura en su infancia. Perdió a su madre demasiado pronto, ya que ella falleció de cáncer cuando el tenía poco más de veinte años. Sin embargo, Dios lo bendijo en ese

momento con el amor de su vida y amor eterno, María Mejía, también de Quitandeje. Comenzaron juntos el viaje de toda su vida y crearon una familia con un hijo, Gerardo López Mejía. En busca de oportunidades y una vida mejor para su familia, Javier emigró de México a Estados Unidos. Trabajó en las granjas de Texas hasta establecerse en Oklahoma en los años 1980 en Edmond. Dios le envió una segunda madre, Imogene Harlan, que era enfermera anestesista y entusiasta de los caballos de miniatura. La familia de Imogene tenía raíces en Edmond desde la década de 1930. Trabajó y vivió en su granja de caballos de miniatura, además de ser carpintero en el área metropolitana de OKC. Javier vivió el resto de su vida en Edmond (hasta el fallecimiento de Imogene en 2004) y Arcadia con su hijo, esposa/amor eterno en María. Siempre superándose, logró su GED con educación de 3er grado. Vivió humildemente toda su vida y ahorró/invirtió cada centavo que ganó en su familia. Le enseñó a su hijo su ética de trabajo, generosidad y empuje y le inculcó el valor de la humildad y la educación, lo que le permitió asistir a la escuela de medicina pagándole su colegiatura para salir sin deudas. Encontró alegría, orgullo y logros trabajando en carpintería en la construcción de viviendas y trabajó toda su vida en Austin Construction y, más recientemente, en Silver Stone Homes. Aunque pudo jubilarse en cualquier momento, trabajó con alegría hasta el último día de su vida. Su pasión era cantar música ranchera desde los cerros de Quitandeje hasta las llanuras de Arcadia. Tuvo compañeros de toda la vida en sus gatos que eran su familia. Su alegría era la granja y la vida rural. Extendió su sabiduría, generosidad y ayuda a su familia, amigos y extraños. Le sobreviven su amor eterno, María Mejía; su hijo, Dr. Gerardo López Mejía M.D. y su familia: esposa, Corazón López, hijos Víctor López, Amelia López, Briana Donovan y Jasmine Debrosse

A visitation for Javier will be held Friday, January 31, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Baggerley Funeral Home, 930 South Broadway, Edmond, OK 73034.

A celebration of life will occur Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Baggerley Funeral Home.
