James Henry “Jack” Garrette was born January 17, 1929, in Oklahoma City to parents George & Anna Bell Garrette. He went to his Heavenly home on September 18, 2015. Jack married Katheryn DeVore in 1949. They were married for 65 years, before her passing just two months ago.
Jack grew up on the family farm in Wanette, OK. At a young age, the family relocated to Oklahoma City where he attended public school. His passion for handguns lead him to a 27-year career with the Oklahoma City Police Department. He was a master gunsmith and firearms instructor, training law enforcement agents from all over Oklahoma with revolutionary training procedures. He never turned anyone away who needed training. A highly skilled marksman, Jack organized the OCPD pistol competition team and won several awards; including the two-man 1974 national championship. He still holds a national record for below shoulder level shooting. Jack used his expertise to start his own small arms ammunition manufacturing company.
After his retirement, Jack and Katheryn moved to Meeker, OK, and literally built their own home on 63 acres. They sold fifth-wheel trailers and loved tending to his peach orchard and vegetable garden. He took great pride in grafting pecan trees. He and Katheryn enjoyed the outdoors together, especially fishing at Lake Tenkiller.
Jack put everyone else’s needs before his own. Even in his last days, he was more concerned about those around him than his own comfort.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Katheryn; son, Mike; daughter-in-law, Clare; siblings: Jean, Violet Doris, George Edwin, and Elnora; grandson, Michual; granddaughter-in-law, Rachel Garrette; and great-grandson Maxwell. He is survived by his daughter, Dianna Williams & husband Raymond; son, Steve Garrette & wife Debbie; grandchildren: Donna Schroeder & husband Robert, David Shattuck & wife Shelly, Darren Shattuck & wife Brittany, Brian Garrette, Courtney Wilks & husband Bryan, Rachel Mosley & husband Eric, and Chelsea Carlisle & husband Michael; 13 great-grandchildren and one on the way; sister, Ruth Carroll; and many other family members and friends.
The family is comforted by the knowledge that Jack is reunited with his beloved Katheryn and they are together in eternal peace with their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the staff of Villagio Assisted Living and Dr. Chad Garmany and staff at Mercy Hospital for the compassionate care of their father.
