Born on January 17, 1962, Alan grew up as a Navy brat, traveling the world with his family before settling in Jones, Oklahoma, where he attended high school. Jones was always home to him, and he cherished the lifelong friendships he made there.
Alan spent many years working in the HVAC industry before retiring and taking on a job with Blue and Gold, which allowed him to travel to FFA departments across the state. He loved meeting and visiting with the ag teachers, often coming home with a new hat or T-shirt from the schools he visited. Alan never met a stranger and had a gift for making people feel like old friends.
A true outdoorsman, Alan loved hunting, fishing, and spending time in nature. His father used to joke that he was born a hundred years too late—he belonged in the woods, setting up targets and shooting his guns for hours. He was also an avid collector of knives and firearms, finding great joy in buying, selling, and trading them.
Above all, Alan’s greatest joy in life was being “Pawpaw.” His love for his children was immeasurable, but his grandchildren held a special place in his heart. He greeted them with his signature, “It’s your Pawpaw,” and nothing made him happier than spending time with them.
In October 2023, Alan was diagnosed with cancer. He fought bravely, pushing through into remission, only for the disease to return a year later. Though he battled with everything he had, he often said he was tired. On Sunday, March 2, 2025, God granted Alan his ultimate healing, calling him home to Heaven.
Alan gave his life to Christ while attending church with his daughter, and in his final years, he found great comfort in God’s word. Though he faced many battles, he found peace in his faith.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Norma Horton.
He is survived by his three children: Harvey Alan Horton Jr.; Kennedy Leverett and her husband, Morgan; and Michael Hickey and his wife, Holly. He leaves behind four beloved grandchildren: Nash and Elliot Leverett, Maddi DeCastro, and Gavyn Hickey.
He is also survived by his siblings: Mary Sullaway and her husband, Greg; John Horton and his wife, Jackie; and David Horton and his wife, Kelly. Alan was deeply loved by numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A celebration of Alan’s life will be held at Baggerly Funeral Home, 930 S. Broadway, Edmond, OK, on Wednesday, March 12, at 3 p.m. In honor of his love for the outdoors, those who wish to pay tribute are encouraged to spend some time in nature, take a walk in the woods, or cast a fishing line in his memory. Please send any flowers no later than Monday, March 10th.
Alan was a man who loved deeply, lived fully, and left an unforgettable mark on those who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will live on in the stories, laughter, and love he shared.
