Harry Floyd Liggett, 97, died peacefully April 27, 2023, at his home in Edmond, Oklahoma. He was born November 18, 1925, in Lincoln, Kansas to Earnest Ralph and Mollie (Deves) Liggett. Harry graduated from Lincoln High School in 1943. He joined the United States Marine Corps during his senior year of high school and after graduation was sent overseas to the South Pacific.
After being Honorably Discharged from the USMC, Harry attended Kansas State Teachers College at Emporia. It was there that he earned his BS in Education and met the love of his life Shirley Baird. They married in February of 1948. Harry taught math and industrial arts for 2 years then changed paths and attended Mortuary school in Kansas City and worked for Shirley’s father at Baird Funeral Home in Sedan, Kansas for 10 years.
The family decided to sell the funeral home and it was then that Harry decided to further his education and earned a Doctorate of Optometry in 1963 from the University of Houston. He practiced optometry for 25 years in Kansas. Beginning in 1980, Harry and Shirley coordinated Lay witness Missions for 25 years. They held 75 missions in 7 states. During that time, they also led Life in the Spirit Seminars for 15 years.
In Harry’s own words: "Sometime in my middle 50’s I began to feel a definite call into full time pulpit ministry. I was pretty sure Shirley was not going to be in favor of this, so I told the Lord ‘when I’m in my 60’s’. Finally, when I was 62, I told Shirley. She actually agreed, but said she was not the type to be a pastor’s wife- how wrong she was!" He served in Newton, Kansas at East Side United Methodist Church for 5 years then went on to serve several small churches in Kansas over the next 7 years.
After retiring from the ministry, Harry and Shirley moved to Forsythe, MO. They lived there for 3 years before moving to Beloit, Kansas to be near family. In 2005, they moved to Edmond, OK where the rest of their family relocated. Harry and Shirley joined New Covenant United Methodist Church in 2006 where they met very dear friends and felt very loved.
