Darla grew up in Clinton, OK, where she was little sister to Laquita and Donita until, to her delight, baby brother Jim came along when she was a senior. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1961 and wed Gordon McAtee on October 12, 1962. They had two daughters together. In the mid-1970s and now in her 30s, Darla became a single mom and an improbable example for the women in her life by determining to go to college and become a pharmacist to support herself and her girls. They were difficult years raising two girls on her own, working full time, and going to school, but in 1981 she proudly obtained her pharmaceutical degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
Darla worked and lived throughout western Oklahoma until 1984 when she settled in Mustang and met her husband. She married Richard Young on July 5, 1985 and loved the family that came with the marriage as her own. They moved to Muskogee in the early 1990s where she continued her work as a pharmacist and enjoyed having family gatherings at their house before retiring to Oklahoma City in 2009.
Darla was kind and loving to all those who came across her path. She taught us to be strong, independent, and courageous even when you do not think you can. She loved us fiercely and taught us to love each other. She trusted Jesus as her Savior as a young girl, and spent her last years talking to Him often and was ready to go to Heaven.
She is preceded in death by her husband Richard Young; her parents Chester J and Edna Jean Webb; her sister Laquita Moss; and her brother in law John Brooks.
She is survived by her daughters Shelley Schnoor and husband Mark of Grove, OK and Leslie Whittington and husband Pierson of Edmond, OK, step-son Jason Young of Oklahoma City, OK; grandchildren Melissa Mayfield, Kaela Delgado, PJ Whittington, Emma Whittington, Aubrey Taylor, and Shelby Young; 5 great-grandchildren; sister Donita Brooks; and brother Jim Webb and wife Becky; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. The family is planning on having private services.
