Clara J. Starnes Clawson

Clara Jalene (Starnes) Clawson, 91, formerly of Muskogee, OK, passed away May 26, 2016, at the Grace Living Center in Edmond, OK. She was born November 26, 1924, in Purcell, OK, to Otis and Opal (Martindale) Starnes. Clara was the oldest of two children born to that couple. She and her younger brother, Donald, grew up living with paternal grandparents, Walter and Ada Lee Starnes, in Cushing, OK.

Clara graduated from Cushing High School in 1942, as valedictorian of her class. She married Clyne Davis, July 25, 1942, and they had two daughters, Rebecca Jean (Davis) Copeland and Denise Leanne (Davis) Jobe. During their marriage, the Davis family lived in Michigan, Texas and Seminole, OK.

Clara married Louis Clawson in 1964, and they spent their life together in Muskogee, OK. Mrs. Clawson was retired from Phoenix Federal Savings and Loan Association in Muskogee. She was honored as the American Business Women “Woman of the Year” during her time with Phoenix Federal Savings.

A life-long Baptist, Mrs. Clawson was a member of the Muskogee First Baptist Church where she enjoyed her Sunday school classes, and the time she spent planning and directing travel trips for the church groups. Clara was a talented seamstress and cook. She loved her roses and enjoyed reading, travel and movies.

Clara is survived by her husband, Louis Clawson; two daughters, Rebecca Copeland, Edmond, OK, and Denise Jobe, Muskogee, OK; grandchildren, Kris Copeland and wife, Nikka, Miami, FL, Kandi Hoehner and her husband, Dan, and Kyle Copeland, Edmond, OK, and Ashley Jobe, Muskogee, OK; great grandchildren, Abbie, Laura, and Joe Hoehner and Sarah Copeland, all of Edmond, OK, Aleks Copeland, Miami, FL, and Bella and Anna Jobe, Muskogee, OK; and six brothers and sisters, Barbara Woods, Leslie Starnes, Darlene White, Darrel Starnes, Sharon Hansel and David Starnes; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents; her parents; two brothers, Donald Starnes and Raymond Starnes; and a grandson, Keith Copeland.

Services for Mrs. Clawson will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday June 2, 2016, at the Baggerley Funeral Home, 930 S. Broadway, Edmond, OK. Burial is planned at Memorial Park Cemetery in Edmond, OK.
