Alfred “Al” William Kamakaokahola Smith was born February 18, 1939 in Waianai, Oahu, Hawaii to Margaret Kapililani Pa and Henry Edward Smith and entered into Heaven’s Gate on September 19, 2014, at his home in Edmond, OK. Al lived in Oahu until he was seventeen years old, when he joined to the US Navy. Al enjoyed the Navy and the many different places and people he met around the world where he was stationed. He retired after 20 years of service.
Upon retiring from the Navy, Al held a variety of jobs, including working in a bakery, a saw mill and an owner-operator of an 18-wheeler. After a time, he decided to return to college and became a Registered Nurse. He worked for 20 years, primarily for Kaiser Hospitals in Southern and Northern California. He and his wife, Kim, who was also a nurse, decided to move to Corpus Christi, Texas and both worked for Home Health Agencies. Al wanted to return to his first love of hospital nursing and worked for several more years in Corpus Christi hospitals, before retiring again. At that time, he took up golf and became quite the golfer, playing at least three times per week.
After Kim’s death, Al met Charla Perry and later moved to Edmond, OK where he has lived for the past 11 years. Al and Charla loved traveling in their motor home, going on cruises and attending church together at Crossings Community Church, where they are both members. Because of health issues, he could no longer play golf, but kept himself busy in his workshop that he constructed in his backyard. He was a master of everything he attempted.
Al was preceded in death by his parents; his children’s mother, Diane Dalrymple (Stan); wife, Kim Smith; grandson, Nathan Smith; and great-grandson, Joseph Wade Evans. He is survived by his wife, Charla of the home; daughters: Linda Ladrigue (Pat) of Olathe, KS, Mona Maroon (Charlie) of Corpus Christi, TX, and Tammy Smith of Olathe, KS; sons, Keith Smith of Olathe, KS, and Jeff Smith of Los Angeles, CA; stepson, John Derrick Litchfield (Lorely) of Mons, Belgium; seven grandchildren: Diana Reno, Alfred Smith (Ashley), April Mathura (Richard), Charlie Maroon, Jr., Deidre Evans, Diane Evans and an “adopted” grandson, Joe Evans; step-grandchildren include Mikhael Litchfield, Dominique Litchfield, Saray Drew (Brandon) and R.J. McCombs; 13 great-grandchildren; and many close friends.
Visitation will be at Baggerley Funeral Home, Monday, from 1pm to 8pm; with family to receive friends from 5pm to 7pm. A memorial service will be held at Crossings Community Church Chapel, 14600 N Portland Ave, OKC, at 11am, Tuesday, September 23, 2014.
