Her childhood was spent in Oakridge, Tennessee where she graduated from High School. Mary Catherine went on to attend David Lipscomb University, UTC and earned a B.A. from Lewis University in Lockport, Illinois. She received a master’s Degree in Gifted Education from the University of Wisconsin.
While teaching in Illinois, she was named Teacher of the Year. She also received Distinguished Educator Award from the University of Wisconsin. Mary Catherine taught in Gifted Education programs for 48 years, receiving many accolades for excellency in teaching.
She was married to Roger Wells Gifford of Illinois and Wisconsin.
Survivors include her sisters, Joan Stuckey and Marie Stephenson and a brother, Dr. Jim (Mary) Davis; cousins, Wanda Gentry, Muecke (Cathy) Barker, Mary Keith (Maurice) Bowen, Dr. Larry (Virginia) Rigsby; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Thursday at Greenwood Cemetery with Minister David Schonhoff officiating. The service will be live streamed on Chattanooga Funeral Home, East Chapel’s Facebook page. There will be no visitation.
