Laurence Herbert Morgan, Sr., 99, passed away Monday, May 2, 2011 in a local hospital. He was a native of California and moved to Chattanooga in 1939. He has been a very active member of Ridgeview Baptist Church since 1956, served as a Deacon and was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. Mr. Morgan was a graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara. He worked as a school teacher with Chattanooga City Schools and was also an architect, having designed many buildings in Chattanooga. He was a member of the Brainerd Optimist Club where he was better known as “Flashlight” by the many racers throughout his 50 plus years as a member. During his time he served all positions of office and was scholarship chairperson for many years. He also served from committee chairs to Lt. Governor for the Tennessee District Optimist. Larry was the true example of an Optimist and will be missed dearly by his fellow Optimists. He was also a member of the REA Bowling League at Holiday Bowl for 35 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Davis Morgan; son, Lawrence H. Morgan, Jr.; brother, Clive Morgan and sister, Gwenn Nagle.
Survivors include his daughter, Mary Ann Henegar of Chattanooga; three grandchildren, Scott (Dianna) Morgan of Soddy-Daisy, TN, Terri (Dean) Tomasek of Nashville, TN and Gina (Gregg) Bazemore of McDonald, TN; three great-grandchildren, Jessica Bazemore, Megan Bazemore and Caitlyn Morgan; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Thursday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Fate Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East. The family will receive friends from 4-8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
