Joe P. Dyer, Jr., 87, of East Ridge passed away Thursday, November 10, 2016. He was an active member, Sunday school teacher and Deacon of Highland Park Baptist Church for 63 years. Joe attended Signal Mountain Grammar School and was awarded the American Legion School Medal. He earned the rank of Eagle
Scout with Troup # 60. He was a 1947 graduate of Central High School and was a National Honor Society torchbearer. He was Cadet Captain of Honor Company “C”, a member of the boxing team and won Golden Gloves with second round knockouts. Joe served in the U.S. Navy aboard the destroyer Sperry after World War II. He served as student President of the Student body of Tennessee Temple College in 1949 and graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a B.S. in Education, Economics and Physical Education. Joe taught school in Hamilton County for 12 years and 10 years in East Ridge. He was awarded a Lifetime P.T.A. membership at McBrien School. He moved his retail bicycle store “Best Bicycle Store” to East Ridge in 1956. He served as President of the East Ridge Chamber of Commerce in 1976. Joe served as a Founding Director of Pioneer Credit Company from 1974 to December of 2014. He served as Road Captain of the Chattanooga Bicycle Club for 3 years and as President for one year. He was a life member of the National Knife Collectors Association.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, J. Pope Dyer, Sr. and Anna Adams Dyer; sister, Jean and brother, Dr. John Dyer, wife, Catherine Dyer and granddaughter, Nicole Presnell.
Survivors include two sons, Joe P. Dyer, III and Dan C. (Terri) Dyer; two grandchildren, Dan Dyer and Mark Dyer; two great-grandchildren, Drew Presnell and Memphis Dyer.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Monday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Chris Peponis officiating. Burial will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 4-8 PM Saturday and from 2-6 PM Sunday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home,
