James Russell Mizell, 72, of Chattanooga passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2017 at his home. He was a member and Deacon at Tiftonia Church of Christ. Mr. Mizell was a graduate of Central High School class of 1963. Following his graduation he served in the US Navy aboard the USS Sacramento as a radio operator during the Vietnam War. He had owned Mizell’s Clothing and sold insurance for Life and Casualty Insurance Company before beginning his career as a switchman with CSX Railroad. He was a classic car enthusiast and enjoyed restoring old cars.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Flora Mizell.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Sharon Miller Mizell; two sons, Ron (Lisa) Mizell and Ricky (Tawnya) Mizell; two grandchildren, Brooke and Tyler; two sisters, Evelyn (Perry) St. John and Glenda (Stanley) Shelley; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins and his beloved little dog, Rosie.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Wednesday at Tiftonia Church of Christ with Minister Gary McDade and Minister Ed Beard officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, West with military honors. The family will receive friends from 4-8 PM Tuesday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road and from 12 – 1 PM Wednesday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
