He was born on February 28, 1951 to Charles Shaw, Sr. and Marcella Shaw Cornish. He joined the United States Army when he was 17 years old and served two tours in Vietnam. He was discharged as a sergeant and awarded the following medals: Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Charles joined the Chattanooga Police Dept. in 1971. He also worked for CARTA, Chattanooga Choo-Choo, as an animal control officer for the city and Humane Educational Society. Charles was the owner and operator of his own over the road trucking company, he also owned Shaw House Monogramming and recently Aunt Sue’s K-9 Bakery.
Shaw was an adventurous traveler. Traveling with his wife around the world to more than 40 countries seeing everything from the Great Wall of China, a safari in Africa, and Manchu Picchu in South American.
Even though Charles had no children of his own he was a mentor to all the kids in Highland Park where he served as President for the neighborhood association. He also fixed a playground for the area children named Shaw Playground. He was awarded the Jefferson Award for his efforts.
Shaw leaves behind the love of his life, Uneva Reagan Shaw, a mother Marcella Cornish, a sister Beverly (Tom) Tallent, a brother Tim Cornish, a brother-in-law Dwight Reagan, sister-in-law, Mintie (Tim) Welchance, nieces and nephews, constant companion Stormy and devoted friends.
The pallbearers are Officer Aaron Williams, Glen Norwood, Kevin Blakemore, Will Sledge, Dennis Reagan, Jim Hixson, Tony Schrader, Melvin Carson, and honorary Terry Parks and JT Marlin.
Only graveside services will be held on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at 12:30 pm at the National Cemetery with a celebration of life service to be held at Lindsey Street Hall on Sunday, April 29, 2012 from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Charles’ name to Shaw Playground in care of Judith Shore 1501 Union Ave; Chattanooga, TN 37404 or Humane Education Society, 212 North Highland Park Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37404.
