Mrs. Ellis, widow of George G. Ellis, who passed in May of 2014, was a prominent presence in Chattanooga’s business and community circles for decades. A devoted member of the city’s Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, she was instrumental in establishing the church’s Sunday school program as well as many other contributions to a community founded by her father-in-law, Gus Ellis.
During World War II, Mrs. Ellis, a native of Pitman New Jersey, worked at the Radio Corporation of America in Camden, New Jersey.
Once she moved to Chattanooga, Mrs. Ellis was the owner/operator of Chuell Enterprises, which included such business ventures as Chatta-Newcomers, a welcome service to new Chattanooga residents; an agent of Forrester-Smith, an international advertising specialty business entity; and an executive assistant to several Chattanooga businesses. She also served as the secretary of the Tennessee Chapter of the American Association of Textile Colorists and Chemists, a freelance reporter for Fairchild Publications, and a volunteer at Siskin Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, and other charities in the Chattanooga area including organizations supporting heart disease, cancer, orphans, addiction recovery services, and spiritual health organizations.
Mrs. Ellis was an active supporter of Henry L. Barger Elementary School, Brainerd Junior High School, and Brainerd High School, where she volunteered many hours of service in an array of areas.
She is survived by her son, Steven G. Ellis, of Darnestown, Maryland; her daughter-in-law, Sylvia M. Ellis, also of Darnestown; and her grandchildren, Steven Andrew Ellis of Baltimore, Maryland; Christopher John Ellis of Rockville, Maryland; and Katharine Marie Ellis of Darnestown.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 PM on Monday, May 23rd at Chattanooga Funeral Home – East Chapel.
Services will be held at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation at 10 AM on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 with Father Stavros Ballas officiating.
Interment will follow at Lakewood Memorial Gardens East.
In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Ellis requested donations be made in her memory to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, 722 Glenwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37404.
