Andrew “Andy” Murphy Egan, 90, died at his home, Monday afternoon, February 11, 2019. Andy was born in Chattanooga to the late John Henry and Katherine Walsh Egan. Andy graduated from Notre Dame High School and The University of Chattanooga. He had a strong desire to serve his country and graduated a year early from high school by attending summer sessions so that he could join the WW II war effort. He earned the World War II Victory Medal and also served in the Korean War. After earning his bachelor’s degree in Engineering, he worked at Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile, Alabama. His career then led him to NASA where he was part of the Delta Operations Team involved in launch operations. After retirement from NASA, Andy moved back to Chattanooga and enjoyed regaling friends and family with fascinating stories of his experiences working in the space program.
Andy will be remembered for his sincere love for God, country, and family. He avidly enjoyed fishing, gardening, and home projects. He helped many neighbors and family members over the years with home and lawn maintenance. He will be missed by so many who always knew him as a Good Samaritan.
Survivors include two nephews, John Kevin (A. Faye) Duffy and David P. (Cathy H.) Duffy, and a niece, Mary A. Duffy (Gary Higbee) as well as several great nephews and a great niece. His best friend and next door neighbor, John Henson (Stacie) was like a son to Andy and looked out for his welfare for many years as well as helping to closely manage his care during his recent illness.
Graveside services will be at 2:00 pm Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Military Honors with Father Jim Vick officiating.
Family will receive friends from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm Monday and from 11:00 am until 1:30 pm Tuesday at Chattanooga Funeral Home, East Chapel.
