MARTHA JANE ESTES REEVES, 83, of College Park, moved on to her place in heaven on Sunday, October 14, 2012. Born and raised the youngest of nine children in Hapeville, Jane Reeves, known to everyone connected with her grandchildren as Mimi, was loved so very much by her family and her multitude of friends. Preceded in death by her husband of over 41 years, Rex T. Reeves, Sr., and all eight of her brothers and sisters, Jane’s love and willingness to sacrifice for her family was unsurpassed. Jane’s children, Greg Bateman living in Douglasville, Rex T. Reeves, Jr. living in Southern California, and Regina Reeves Wood living in Marietta, as well as their spouses Linda, Jackie, and David, will all miss her dearly. Jane’s eight grandchildren truly cherished their Mimi from both nearby and far away. Joshua Bateman, Jessica Bateman, Jillian Reeves, Lauren Reeves, Kristen Reeves, Tripp Wood, Rex Wood, and Reeves Wood were blessed to have Jane/Mimi not only laugh and play with them, but also teach and comfort them, in a way that made every moment magical. Jane used her special gift with children to touch many other young lives, including as a devoted and loved Sunday school teacher at the Hapeville United Methodist Church, her church home since the 1940’s.
Serving on boards and in various positions at her church and in civic organizations, Jane was involved in the community in many ways. She cherished her friends in her beloved “sewing club,” her bridge club, her Bunco group, her garden club, the College Park Women’s Club, the College Park Historical Society, and the Hapeville and College Park United Methodist Churches. Jane also treasured her children’s in-laws, the caring people who assisted her, and wonderful neighbors in Hapeville, Atlanta, College Park and Marietta. Jane’s great friends were her extended family.
Jane’s artistic and creative abilities were known to many, as she won awards and accolades for her china painting, oil painting, flower arrangements, cooking, and poetry. Her trademark handwriting was strikingly elegant, and never failed to garner a compliment.
Jane had a passion for quick-thinking games like bridge and was well-versed in many subjects. It was a rare crossword puzzle that she could not complete. Nothing -- not even cancer -- could dampen Jane’s positive outlook and zest for life. Atlanta has lost a genuine, loving, and graceful lady in Jane. She was always beautiful inside and out.
In addition to her children and grandchildren, Jane is survived by many nieces and nephews, including her dear niece Genet Baron, who was like a sister to her, as well as her sisters-in-law, Vera Estes and Gerry Estes, for whom she cared very deeply. Visitation will take place on Sunday, October 21, 2012 from 6PM to 8PM at the Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home in East Point. Services will be held Monday, October 22, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Hapeville United Methodist Church followed by interment at the College Park Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hapeville United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
