He was born December 22, 1935, in Mason City to Jacob Washington and Emma Lillian (Jurgens) Benedict. He married Winifred “Wini” Miller on November 5, 1960, and she preceded him in death on August 13, 2016.
Carl always enjoyed working, starting early in his youth as a paper boy, followed by numerous other jobs. After serving in the U.S. Army, he worked for over 25 years as a railroad engineer for the P&PU, TP&W, Santa Fe Railroad. He also owned and operated Benedict Auto Sales for 61 years.
He enjoyed working on all cars, and had a passion for classic cars, trains, music, and a good cold beer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brothers, John Benedict and Harold Benedict.
Surviving are his children, Rosemary Gray, Donald Benedict, Daniel Benedict, Debra (Brian) Shirley, Diane Benedict, and Darlene (Richard) Gutierrez; grandchildren, Chris (Suzie) Poor, Jonathan (Ashley) Shirley, Josh (Shelbi Shane) Shirley, Jessica (Josh Nichols) Shirley, Jordan Shirley, Felicia Gutierrez, and Alaina Gutierrez; 7 great-grandchildren, and 3 on the way.
Carl loved and cherished his family above all else. The radiant light of his love will continue to illuminate our lives. Although he has departed from this Earth, his presence will forever be etched in our memories.
A memorial visitation and celebration of life will be held from 4:00-6:00 pm, Thursday, May 25, 2023, at Remmert Funeral Home. A gathering for friends and family will follow immediately after at Taylor Masonic Lodge in Washington, IL for food and fellowship from 6:00-8:00 pm.
