Dr. Niles Russell Kevern, a dedicated scholar and passionate advocate for fisheries and wildlife, passed away on January 7, 2024 at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in his field. Born on May 15, 1931, in Elizabeth, Illinois to Russell and Mary Kevern, Dr. Kevern's life was marked by a profound commitment to environmental science.
Growing up in a small town, Niles discovered his lifelong love, Kay Williams, at a young age. After graduating, he enlisted in the US Air Force in 1951, serving his country with honor. Upon his return, Niles and Kay were united in marriage in Elizabeth in 1955, embarking on a journey together that spanned nearly seven decades.
Dr. Kevern's academic pursuits led him to the University of Montana where he earned his BS degree with high honors in Wildlife Technology in 1958. His educational journey continued at Michigan State University where he obtained his MS degree in Fisheries Management in 1961 and later earned his PhD in Limnology and Pollution Biology. Dr. Kevern's dedication and contributions to his field were recognized through numerous honors, including the Distinguished Faculty Award from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Alumni at MSU in 1992. In 2010, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Michigan Chapter of the North American Lake Management Society.
Throughout his career, Dr. Kevern actively participated in numerous organizations and his work was regularly published in many professional journals. His career included serving as Chairman of the Fisheries and Wildlife Department at MSU, and later as Professor Emeritus of the department. Dr. Kevern also held the position of Associate Director for the Michigan Sea Grant Program. His impact extended beyond research, as he served as a major professor for countless graduate and PhD students, leaving an indelible mark on the next generation of environmental scientists.
Niles held many titles in his life, but his favorite role was being a father and grandfather. He loved nothing more than spending time with his children and grandchildren providing guidance, giving nature lessons, and having philosophical conversations. Niles brought a smile to everyone he met. He loved to tell jokes and shaggy dog stories that became longer each time they were told. He loved spending time at the family cottage where he spent countless hours untangling his grandchildren's fishing lines. Niles was an avid Spartan fan and along with Kay, attended numerous sporting events over the decades.
Niles is survived by his devoted wife, Kay Kevern, and their children: Michael (Dawn) Kevern, Tamara (Robert) Kevern Antekeier, and JoAnn (Pat Carroll) Kevern Smith. Niles will be remembered fondly by his grandchildren: Brittany (Joseph) Szombati, Tony Kevern, Christopher (Lindsay) Turner, Eric Russell Yelvington, Emily Yelvington, Houston Russell Smith, Claire Smith, and Luke Smith. Additionally, Niles leaves behind four great-grandchildren. Niles was preceded in death by his brother, Ron Kevern.
