I witnessed a beautiful memory of Michael with his son at St Thomas Aquinas Church shortly before his death.  His son took him to Mass because he knew he really wanted to go.  His son was so loving and caring with his dad that it was truly a loving memorable memory I will keep with me forever. .  He never took his hand off of his dad and was his support and helped him participate fully in the Mass, including walking up to receive Communion.  We then met at the Knights of Columbus breakfast and got a chance to chat.  He told me how he and his siblings went to STA for school and his much his dad wanted to go to Mass.  Apparently he also wanted to go to a pancake breakfast and to their luck, there was one that Sunday!  How truly fortunate for Dr. Radtke to have such a caring person with him and it to be his son.  I know so many pray that they will have their family by their side in the end and he truly was given that gift.  I googled your dad afterwards and what a career!     I can only imagine that you as a family will cherish his memory and celebrate his life.  God bless you all and it was an honor to meet both Dad and son.  (I'm not even sure of the son's name but I hope to see him again at STA. 

I worked with Dr. Rathke for 9 years when I was in the Chemistry Department at MSU.  He was always kind and laughing whenever I saw him.  He always took the time to say hello, how are you, what's going on in your life.  I will always remember him smiling.  Rest in Peace Dr. Rathke and watch over your family from above.  My sincere condolences to the family  on your loss.

My first job at Michigan State University was in the Chemistry Department.  I started as a secretary on the Organic Chemistry floor where Dr. Rathke was a beloved instructor of Organic Chemistry.  Students would definitely vie to get into his sections as he was such a great teacher.  Your family has my deepest sympathy -  your Father/Grandfather was a very kind, amiable and wonderful person. I have so many fond memories of our Boy Scout Master  Mr. Rathke.  His wisdom and leadership, sense of humor and infinite patience with the rowdy boys of Troop 293 is something that I will always look back on with great appreciation. To this day, my very closest of friends came from those days of Troop 293, and the inclusive culture your father created. Our weekly meetings, camp-outs, and Nothwood’s are some of the very best times in my childhood. I am honored to have been part of his troop back then.
