He graduated from Iowa State University and went on to earn his Ph.D. in Chemistry while studying under and contributing to the work of nobel prize laureate, Herbert Brown at Purdue University. There he met his wife, Eileen. They were married in 1965 and raised their 6 children in the Catholic Church at St. Thomas Aquinas in East Lansing.
Dr. Rathke retired and earned the honor of Professor Emeritus after 48 years of teaching and research in organic chemistry at MSU. Michael was a master wood carver and gardener. He was a devoted and tremendously kind father who enjoyed cooking and preparing family meals.
Michael passed away from complications with Parkinson’s disease. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen, and sons, David and Dennis. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Diana (Vince), Daniel (Eliana), Deborah (Richard), Michael, and Amy (Keith); his grandchildren, Taylor, Jack, Lily, Cassidy, Mason, Roman, Gabriella, Isabella, Josephina, Bella, Caitlin, Matthew, and Alexandra; his brothers and sisters, friends, and colleagues.
A visitation for Michael will be held on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes East Lansing Chapel, 1730 E Grand River Ave., East Lansing, MI 48823. A rosary service will be held on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at 7:00 PM at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes East Lansing Chapel. A funeral mass will occur on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at 11:00 AM at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, 955 Alton Rd., East Lansing, MI 48823 with a half-hour visitation prior, from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM. Following the funeral mass, Michael will be laid to rest in St. Joseph Cemetery, 2520 W Willow St., Lansing, MI 48917.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Michael's honor to the MSU Promise Endowed Scholarship fund through Michigan State University.
