Merrick Abner Richardson, known to everyone as Rick, passed away in East Lansing, Michigan on September 8, 2018. He was 75. He leaves his wife, Susan; sons, Merrick Allen and wife, Toni; son, Mark Andrew and wife, Julie; daughter, Sera Mills; grandsons, Merrick Anthony and Michael Allen and his sister, Karen Roenisch.
Rick was born in Chicago and grew up in the nearby suburb of River Forest, graduating from Oak Park and River Forest High School. He came to East Lansing to study accounting at Michigan State University, and there, he met the love of his life, Susan (née Rogers). They were married in 1966.
In 1971, Rick and fellow CPA David Layton opened Layton & Richardson, P.C., an accounting firm still going strong 47 years later. Rick loved his work and was a fixture in the Greater Lansing business community, serving on the boards of several local charities. He retired in 2013.
Rick enjoyed a cold beer and a good laugh, and was an avid tennis player with a powerful first serve. He was a lifelong outdoorsman and a diehard fan of Michigan State sports. On any given Saturday each Fall, he could usually be found walking alongside the MSU Marching Band across the Red Cedar, on his way to Spartan Stadium.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, September 22 at 1 pm in the Lake Huron Room on the 3rd Floor of the MSU Union, located at 49 Abbot Road, East Lansing.
