Mary Hutcheson

Mary Ellen (Gayley) Hutcheson, age 86, of East Lansing, Michigan, passed away October 29, 2023. Mary is survived by her husband Jere Hutcheson, son Josh Cleland and wife Cathy, stepdaughter Amy West and husband Brian, son-in-law Bruce Edenton, sister Sarah Kirsch and husband Richard, brother Matthew Galey and wife Jane, grandchildren Abigail, Sophie, Carlisle, Loren, and Josie, and great grandson Zander.

She is preceded in death by her parents Owen and Dorothy Gayley, daughter Lisa Edenton, and siblings Martha Mueller and Owen Clark Gayley. Mary and her husband Jere enjoyed many travels throughout Europe and other destinations. She was particularly fond of France. Mary enjoyed knitting and reading in her spare time, and attended many musical performances at MSU where her husband was on the music school faculty.

Mary grew up in Kane, Pennsylvania, and was valedictorian of her high school class. She attended Rochester Institute of Technology before settling in East Lansing with her first husband, Charles Cleland. After earning a degree in nutrition at Michigan State University, she worked 22 years as a laboratory technician at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Avian Disease and Oncology Laboratory.

Mary’s ashes will be returned to Forest Lawn Cemetery in Kane, Pennsylvania, where a Celebration of Life Memorial service will be held in the spring of 2024. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the charity of your choice.
