So many sweet memories with Marty. What a loving father, I remember attending my daddy daughter Valentines dance with Amy and Marty. What a sweet time! So blessed to know him. My family gives many thanks to the Johnson's as they extended an invitation to VBS at Trinity Church decades ago. it was that small invitation that led to many salvations, and a faith filled community.Grateful beyond words. Sending warmest thoughts and sincerest condolences to the Johnson family. We love you.

It was a great shock to know of Marty’s passing away. When I joined as Medical Physicist in 1986, I filed the position Marty had before. We met number of times later at meetings.

I remember Marty as a warm person with bright smile. He was very helpful to make me comfortable handle my responsibilities. He had the trade-mark bow-tie, as bright as his smile.

I pray for Marty’s family.

Both a pleasure and honor to have known Marty. He will be missed by many.

Marty.  Buddy.   You were one of the most genuine, giving, considerate, passionate and compassionate men I have ever met.  Though we hadn't communicated directly in the past few years, I was always aware of what you and Jayne, your beautiful children and grand children were doing via my brother Kevin, and before she passed my sister-in-law Dee.    I was so fortunate to have had you as one of my pledge brothers at MSU and remember the birthdays we shared together, along with Steve Steinhart.  All three of us Fiji's with September birthdays 7th, 9th and 17th and all born in 1956.    

It was so enjoyable to watch you and the MSU Cheerleading Squad earn the national title as well as at all of the games.  I remember your back surgery and the pain you endured until you were healed.  Your stories of growing up in California and of my being included in activities with your mom and sisters at their home in East Lansing.    After graduation, you expanded your giving even further through your work at Sparrow and through your involvement in your church.   I wish I could locate a photo of us while at MSU to share here with your family and others.

The news of your unexpected passing is a shock to all of us and I'm crying in my sorrow as I type this.   The old adage that the good die young is so true here Marty.  You gave so lovingly to others and God decided that your work here was completed.   He needs you for something else now.   Please smile down on us from time to time buddy.     You so wonderfully and positively impacted so many lives through your 62 years and we all have you to be grateful for.      Thanks Marty.

I first met Jayne and Marty when we lived in East Lansing in the Bailey subdivision. My husband, Jay, worked with and was friends with Marty at Sparrow Hospital. Jay and Marty would park next to each other at Sparrow, and this would give each of them a reminder to pray for each other during the day. Jayne and I took turns carpooling our oldest daughters to school at that time.

Marty, Jayne, and their family, along with my husband, Jay, and myself all attend Trinity Church and would see each other there. I would always stop and chat with them on my way out of church. We would always pray for each other and our families. I also had fun teasing Marty about his bow tie collection!

I am praying for Jayne, her children and her family as I'm sure this is not only a shock to them, but will also be a difficult time in their lives.  Marty was always a faithful man of God. I pray to see him in heaven some day! 

Though Marty's exceptional professionalism within the Medical Physics community goes without saying, I believe his kindness, compassion, and friendly nature will leave their imprint on so many of us for years to come.   I always looked forward to seeing him at the various meetings throughout the years.

Dear Johnson Family,
I am so sorry for the loss of your husband, father, teacher, confidant, and friend.  Marty was a very kind and generous person who will be missed by the many communities he was involved in.  Although I met up with Marty at various times through the years in the context of our shared greater Lansing area community, my most frequent and most influential interactions were within the context of the Medical Physics community.  Whether at local meetings or national meetings he was always excited to greet and talk with everyone who stopped him.  Marty was very involved in the Michigan chapter of our medical physics association through the years holding positions of treasurer, national representative, and twice president.  For many years outside of these official positions, he was often the knowledge base for other chapter officers, pleasantly sharing his experience and contacts.  
A few years ago Marty reached out to me and we had several conversations about the new Cancer Center that was under construction, a project he told me he never thought he would see.  He shared with me some insight into how his goals had developed over the years.  He shared that during ones early years you strive to prove yourself in your career, as you reach your 40s and 50s you look strive to hold a work-family balance, and as you reach your 60's you begin to think about legacy.  I know that many more can likely share the wonderful legacy that Marty left within his local communities of family, neighbors, and fellow congregants, as he was strongly committed in each of these communities.  But, as I've said, my strongest link to Marty was within his career community of Medical Physics, so I'd like to share my story.

I was an undergraduate at MSU about to get a degree in physics and had minimal exposure to travelling any route outside of pursuing graduate work in engineering.  I was encouraged by a fellow classmate to accompany him on a visit to Sparrow Hospital to find out about Medical Physics.  I can easily recall the first time I met Marty, because it was the same every time I met Marty; he had a big, welcoming smile and bowtie.  He proceeded to spend several hours discussing this nearly unknown physics specialty within Radiation Oncology.  Nearly 15 years later I still recall much of the conversation, but most importantly I remember the clear and obvious passion for and enjoyment he felt toward the work he did.  Within the week I had applied to graduate schools to pursue Medical Physics.  I can unequivocally confirm that I would not have pursued this career without the long evening Marty set aside to talk to me about the field.  So although, it may not be mortar and concrete, or emblazoned on a plaque, there is a legacy in the countless people who were influenced by sharing this world with Marty Johnson.

Marty and I grew up together. Marty lived in East Lansing and I in South Bend. We are first cousins,brothers, and best friends. Our family’s would get together a couple of times a year either in East Lansing or South Bend for special occasions or holidays. Even though it was only a couple of times a year, Marty and I had special bond.
In adulthood, Marty was raising his family in East Lansing and I was raising my family in California. Just like when we were kids, Marty and I kept the same visiting pattern. I would bring my family to East Lansing and Marty would bring his family to California. We wanted to share our special bond with our families. Recently, we even shared our 30th year of our respective employment together. I love you Marty!
Sometimes Marty was the leader and I was his wingman, and other times I was the leader and Marty was my wingman.
Marty is now on final approach to heaven, and I know he has been cleared to land. One day it will be my  final approach to heaven, and I will once again join up on Marty’s wing for heaven’ s final approach.

I volunteered in the Cancer Center during the 1990's.  Marty was one of my favorite people there.  Always smiling, warm and welcoming, he appreciated the volunteers and made them feel a part of the team.  Marty loved my Rice Krispy treats back when the volunteers would bring snacks for the patients.  He was a wonderful example of Christ's love to others.  I am so very sorry.

A terrible loss -- Marty was exactly what a congregation elder should be: interested, compassionate, helpful, welcoming, friendly, wise, and a true example of a Christian gentleman. Mary and I will miss him. May God comfort his family.

Jayne, I am so sorry to hear of Marty's death.  I did not know him well, but certainly admired his dedication to life as we worked together on the Life Chain for so many years and his love for his family and his faith.  May God bless you and your children with many special memories to ease your pain at this most difficult time.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I drove a Shuttle Bus for Sparrow Hospital.During that time I had the most Awesome opportunity to become friends.I teased him often about being the ‘Smartest’ person on the bus.He always had a Huge Smile on his face and wearing his Bo Tie. He shared stories about his sons love for playing the guitar.I will ALWAYS remember picking him up outside the Oncology dept,waiting for my bus.God Bless his Family. Way so sorry for your loss.

Jayne and children, Jeanne and I were saddened to hear of Marty's passing. Marty was a wonderful man who brought humor and encouragement into the lives of everyone who knew him. He evidenced the grace and love of his Savior, and was a great encouragement to me (Gary) in my own battle with cancer at the Sparrow Cancer Center.
