Lucy was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 11, 1935 to Coran and Khasvart Sarkisian. She is preceded in death by her parents; Coran and Khasvart Sarkisian, her brother; Simon Sarkissian and sister; Dorothy Mosher and is survived by her brother; John Sarkissian as well as several nieces and nephews. She was a proud Armenian-American, spoke the Armenian language fluently, and taught her daughters the importance of honesty, consideration, integrity, and family.
Lucy worked at the National Bank of Detroit prior to marrying her Southwestern High School sweetheart, Sam. Sam and Lucy were married for 40 years and raised five independent daughters; Susan, Elizabeth (David) Myllyla, Laura, Lois (Michael) Aguilera, and Dorothy (Ken) Gerlica. Grandchildren include Joseph, Marie, Isabella and Amelia. Sam and Lucy ran a successful veterinary practice as well as a family farm which she enjoyed very much. She loved living on and working the farm and would comment, “Not bad for a girl from Delrey.” In her retirement years she was well read and sewed hundreds of quilts with her Wednesday Quilting Girls at Faith Lutheran Church in Okemos. She was very proud that the group’s quilts were donated to those in need at various local shelters as well as poorer countries around the world including to people in Armenia. Lucy enjoyed long lunches and spending time with her group of “buddies” who always made her smile and giggle like a teenage girl. Her buddies included a few very dear friends, the Quilting Girls and the University Christian Church ladies whom she had known for more than 50 years, although she was a friend to everyone. She felt strongly about helping those in need and did so in various ways through her quiet generosity.
Her greatest joys in life were her granddaughters, Isabella and Amelia who loved to crawl up on Gran’s lap to read, look at the birds, sit quietly, play games or talk about all life has to offer. Please remember her when you hear kids laughing, birds chirping, or see blossoms on a butterfly bush.
