He was educated at Kalamazoo College, the University of Michigan, and Michigan State University earning a Master's degree in political science. Despite an undergraduate education in math and science, and an early career as a high school teacher, John spent much of his life actively engaged in local public service.
His interest in social justice emerged when he studied at the University of Michigan, during the civil rights movement. He went on to join politically active organizations such as the ACLU, the Michigan Democratic Party, and the Sierra Club. Since then, he served the public in many positions from Precinct Delegate to Ingham County Commissioner, and most recently as a Meridian Township Trustee for 12 years.
John’s attention to detail, persistence in many local issues, and his passion for citizen participation made him a fixture in local politics. John was an avid proponent of the area’s public parks, and was proud to be part of the creation of the Lake Lansing parks during his time as an Ingham County Commissioner.
Outside public service, throughout his life John spent time substitute teaching in area schools and working as a referee for the local soccer leagues.
He is survived by his son, Robert J. Veenstra and wife Erica Begun-Veenstra, grandson Jackson Veenstra, and his brother, Peter Veenstra.
A memorial service is scheduled for June 3rd, 2-4pm at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home in East Lansing. A fund to support the dedication of a park bench in John’s honor will be set up.
The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, East Lansing. On-line condolences and memories may be shared with the family at www.greastlansing.com.
